This course offers didactic training, hands-on simulation and case reviews.

Program Details

This in-person educational program will explore key aspects of carotid artery disease and revascularization, including anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnostic imaging, patient selection, and treatment modalities. It is hosted by Dr. Mahmoud Malas, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Professor of Surgery at UC San Diego Health.

Education will focus on carotid artery stenting (CAS) through sessions focused on clinical guidelines and indications, procedural planning, risk stratification, and clinical outcomes.

Over two days, the workshop includes didactic lecture, interactive case studies, practical application of procedural devices utilizing hands-on training and simulation models, and expert discussions emphasizing advanced techniques, emerging technologies, and complication management.

Learning objectives for this course include...

  • Review carotid artery anatomy, aortic arch types, carotid artery variations, and challenging anatomic considerations.
  • Describe the pathophysiology of carotid atherosclerosis.
  • Identify and compare diagnostic imaging for carotid artery disease.
  • Evaluate risk stratification and patient selection for revascularization.
  • Interpret clinical guidelines and evidence-based management practices.
  • Explore CMS NCD changes and their impact on treatment strategies.
  • Apply decision-making algorithms for selecting treatment approaches.
  • Explain carotid artery stenting principles, including indications and outcomes.
  • Develop strategies for procedural planning in transfemoral carotid stenting.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in transfemoral carotid stenting.
  • Identify and mitigate complications of carotid artery stenting.
  • Explore advanced techniques and emerging technologies in carotid revascularization.
  • Analyze complex cases through interactive case studies.

This program best suits second-year interventional fellows, physicians new to Transfemoral CAS, or those looking to refine their foundational knowledge.  Physicians from all specialties performing TF-CAS are welcome to apply.  In addition, each physician may bring one scrub tech, nurse, or educator who assists in TF-CAS procedures and/or education of staff.

Physicians interested in attending the Carotid Center of Excellence program must 1) join LUMEN BY CORDISTM (click here) and 2) register for the COE program (link included in your LUMEN BY CORDIS account approval email).
