CAS: Foundations in Atherosclerosis Treatment
This course offers didactic training, hands-on simulation and case reviews.
Program Details
This in-person educational program will explore key aspects of carotid artery disease and revascularization, including anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnostic imaging, patient selection, and treatment modalities. Hosted by Dr. Mahmoud Malas, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Professor of Surgery at UC San Diego Health, this program will focus on transfemoral carotid artery stenting (TF-CAS) through sessions focused on clinical guidelines and indications, best practice, procedural planning, risk stratification, tools and techniques, and clinical outcomes.
Over two days, the workshop includes didactic lecture, interactive case studies, practical application of procedural devices utilizing hands-on training and simulation models, peer-to-peer networking, and expert-led discussions.
Participants must arrive on January 30th with departures on February 1st after 3pm.
Learning objectives for this course include...
- Review foundational knowledge of normal carotid and cerebral artery anatomy and pathophysiology
- Understand the role of diagnostic imaging (Carotid Duplex, CTA, MRA/Angiogram) in treatment planning for carotid artery disease
- Improve understanding of carotid disease evidence-based treatment algorithms and protocols with a focus on the transfemoral approach
- Evaluate risk and complication mitigation and management tools and strategies
- Identify optimal patient selection criteria for carotid revascularization via transfemoral carotid angioplasty and stenting versus other treatments
- Develop peer-to-peer network to facilitate continuing education and maintenance of clinical competencies in carotid artery stenting
- Review updated CMS guidelines and requirements for CAS
- Gain hands-on experience with the PRECISE PRO RX® Carotid Stent System and ANGIOGUARD® RX Embolic Protection Device, integrating device features and procedural steps
This program best suits second-year interventional fellows, physicians new to Transfemoral CAS, or those looking to refine their foundational knowledge. Physicians from all specialties performing TF-CAS are welcome to apply. In addition, each physician may bring one scrub technician, nurse, or educator who assists in TF-CAS procedures and/or education of staff.
